Memory must  be repainted

and all its lost fragments

will have to be glued together again.

Erased traces,

yellowed photographs,

sleeping at the bottom of a trunk,

love letters

thrown into the purgatory

of our silences.

Fossilized or dismantled objects,

already absent,

rooted to the spot, superfluous.

from Repainting Memory, by Emile Hemmen, trs. from French by Janine Goedert, Igneus Press, Bedford, NH, 2002, p. 1.
