Bear Stew, poems by Peter Kidd, 1996

The Anatomy of a Season

The core
of the Fall/Winter cusp
is the bone, the vertebrae

the mystery of the tree
is the spine
of the eaten fish

and the earth
becomes the frozen crust
of an unleavened bread

soon
the steelheads
will run in the river.
